Renaissance and dark age
It is an undeniable fact that the development of states is not possible without the progress of knowledge, science and technology. Eventually knowledge has direct influence on the political, cultural and economic dimensions of a social system. Change in the knowledge would cause an ultimate change in the entire social system.
‘Renaissance’, etymology re- “again” (see re-) + nasci “be born”; from Old French and Latin, meaning “rebirth,”; that is renasci “to be born again, or rise/reappear again,” was coined in the 19th century. ‘Dark age’, as opposed to renaissance, defines a period in which the state and societies relatively stop the social processes essential for change and progress. Social stagnation is a typical phenomenon where societies halt creating new ideas, discoveries and innovations.
The reason may include prevailing social dynamics, internal and external enforcements influencing the progressive development of a social system. Commonly, the concept of renaissance define the revival of science, art and literature where the revolution in knowledge abolishes social darkness; the old knowledge is reviewed and is replaced with new discoveries..
Detechnologized transition of knowledge and Middle East great scholars
The concept of renaissance and the dark ages finds its space in medieval societies whence the information and communication methods were not technologized yet.. Historically knowledge was created, experimented and experienced in the long back before Greek civilization in the Middle East civilizations, among others. It was then transferred to Europe and then back to the Middle East. Around 850 AD, prevailing knowledge was made communicable by translation and was reviewed to create new.
In the absence of self-functioning technology, the displacement between knowledge and society was discretely discontinuous. Detechnologized knowledge therefore could not stand independently in the society. It was a period of complex transition, ambient ‘knowledge naissance’ and ‘technologization of social affairs’ which took place between Middle East and Europe. Innovating knowledge in those times, was nonetheless the task of raising the sky over the shoulders. Such challenge was accepted and accomplished by the great scholars and intellectuals of Middle East societies. Unlike before, in modern times, technology has powered the advancement and development of knowledge multiplicatively, corresponding the fact that position of intellectuals and scholars have become inevitably expounded and is acknowledged by all the social institutions of the state including society.
Knowledge finally proceeded with its own field, approached to knock at the door of technology and the societies were rescued by the new phases of industrialization. The Middle East played a historic role to renaissance the knowledge by introducing new mathematics, chemistry, physics, astronomy, medicine art, and literature. It was a glorious role in history played by the Arab world to normalize the transitional phase of knowledge to the generalized higher level of social wisdom from where technology had to come forth to take charge of bridging the gaps between the bright and dark ages of history.
We shall take this opportunity to study how Middle East wisdom houses and knowledge societies in the Arab world bridged the gap between knowledge and society to reach from medieval times at the par of naissance of industrialization.
